Gwendoline Christie on the three creatives that have helped shape her success

The colourist, the dancer and the chef

I’ve never really felt conventional. I’m naturally drawn to misfits; to outsiders,” Gwendoline Christie tells Bazaar. Today, we’re on set with the Emmy-nominated actress, who has been widely celebrated for her portrayal of complex, multi-faceted and nonconformist women, from Jan Stevens in Flux Gourmet to the formidable Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. “As an artist, I’ve always been interested in what exists in the margins – the untold stories. It’s where I feel most at home.”

Christie, 44, has seen her fame catapult in recent years, following starring roles in Netflix’s Wednesday and The Sandman. While her talent and magnetism is undeniable – she’s articulate, charming and possesses a thunderous laugh – we’re meeting with the actress to explore the notion that behind every successful individual, there’s a team of supporters helping to raise them up, drive them forward and unlock their full potential. “That love you feel from your friends, and for the people that go out of their way to help you, can be transformative,” says Christie.

Bazaar is joining Christie as she embarks on a journey with Porsche to illustrate how together, we can go further – a concept the actress and luxury car brand believe in passionately. Along the way, we’re meeting three talented creatives who have played a significant role in the actress’s life, both personally and professionally.

The colourist

Christie met celebrity colourist Josh Wood in 2018, just after she’d filmed her final scenes for Game of Thrones. “I’d been an admirer of Josh’s work for many years. His name kept cropping up in so many fashion shoots I loved,” says Christie.

After being introduced by a mutual friend, the star remembers: “I was nervous to meet Josh because he’s iconic – a visionary – and someone I’d always wanted to work with. In reality, he’s incredibly kind and funny. He wants people to feel good. I never expected to have such a hoot in the chair with him.”

ELLE Style Awards: Gwendoline Christie Accepts Designer Of The Year On Behalf Of Kim Jones

His long-term friend praised the esteemed designer’s ‘undeniable flair’ – and taste in memes – as she accepted the Designer of The Year Award on his behalf

Ingenious British menswear designer Kim Jones, artistic director of Fendi womenswear and haute couture, and currently at the helm of Dior Men, was named Designer Of The Year this evening at the ELLE Style Awards in partnership with Moët & Chandon. With Jones unable to attend, the accolade was accepted on his behalf, by his long-term friend Gwendoline Christie.

Remarking how impressive it is that Jones helms not one but two luxury brands, Christie said: ‘This is a celebration not just of talent and success but of longevity, a rarity in the modern age but particularly in the world of fashion.’ Adding: ‘[He has] a beautiful rarity to create collections that endure, remain startlingly influential and have commercial success.’

‘Our designer is synonymous with modernity – never denying but embracing and reinterpreting tradition,’ she said.

Christie, who joked she has known Jones for ‘a thousand years’ after meeting him at Central St Martins, also spoke to his charm and empathy as an individual, noting his ‘genuine love for the people he works with. He cares for his relationships with friends and collaborators and nurtures them. He’s able to see things people can’t. He’s willing to help you and he actually wants to. He genuinely wants you to be happy.’

Christie couldn’t resist adding a ‘personal thank you for the memes.’ A mark of any great friendship, we’d say.

Ending her touching tribute, Christie expressed: ‘When I think about all the love he shows us, I feel so lucky to call him my friend. We love you. Unfortunately he can’t be here, but I know he’d want to say thank you for all the support and love you show him – and thank you from me too.’
